Some anonymous American handed over £1.4 million to the National Trust of Scotland. The man has no Scottish connection, but he thinks Scottish castles are cool. Beside that, he “had lost all trust in bankers and the US government.” It seems that he felt his money would be better off going to a charity, or something he cared about – enter “Scottish castles.”
He has asked for 50% of his £1.4 million gift to be spent on castles run by the trust, and the rest to be allocated to the Burns Birthplace Museum.
