Cape May County (New Jersey) Historical & Genealogical Society Receives Grant

COURT HOUSE – Cape May County Freeholder M. Susan Sheppard announced that the Cape May County Historical & Genealogical Society has been awarded a General Operating Support Grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.

The grant, in the amount of $9,750, will be used in part to fund a Traveling Trunk for use in local schools to assist in teaching our state and local history. Freeholder Sheppard said, “This is especially valuable at this time when state wide cuts in education budgets make it difficult for school classes to visit our county museum.”

The grant, with matching funds from the Historical Society, will also be used to develop new educational and promotional materials.

The Historical & Genealogical Society owns and operates the Museum of Cape May County and the Alexander Genealogical and Research Library. The Society is dedicated to preserving and presenting the unique history of Cape May County.

The Cape May County Museum is located at 504 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. For more information about the Society and upcoming programs, please visit the Museum website www.cmcmuseum.org or call (609)465-3535.

  1. i do not take part in facebook or other social medias. I can’t find any other way to contact the Cape May Harold.com to respond to a 2008 article I have just found on line. The article was a Letter to the Editor, and was titled:

Reader Thanks Elijah Matthews for His Freedom

I AM A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF ELIJAH MATTHEWS SR. AND WISH TO CONTACT MR. BERNIE GROFF TO DUPLICATE HOW HE FEELS. I, TOO, REMEMBER ELIJAH MATTHEWS’ SACRIFICE ON MEMORIAL DAY, AND CONSIDER HIS YOUNG AGE AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH FROM BEING SHOT WITH A MUSKIT BALL. (ETC.) I OFTEN THINK OF AND REPEAT THE WORDS ON HIS MEMORIAL THAT, AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD, BEGIN WITH: “Ye who take your freedome for grandted, here lies Elijah Matthews, Sr., —-” etc. SOMEDAY, IF GOD GRANTS ME A SOMEDAY, I SHOULD LIKE TO VISIT THAT SAME GRAVESITE/COMMEMORATION IN CAPE MAY. I now live all the way in northern California. Beautiful as it is, I came here to bring my immediate family at the time together to be with my dad in his last years. After that, Another family member spent 10 years or more — on line — with me, putting together family history. It seems to be endless. IF SOMEONE COULD PLEASE TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH OF THAT GRAVESITE AND SEND IT TO ME, I WILL BE MORE THAN THRILLED.

    THANK YOU. SUZANNE STANLEY

  2. Suggest prepare a letter to the County requesting resumption of funding. Make it so that interested persons can click on it and it will be emailed to the proper person. Email the proposed letter to all members of the Society.
