PIERRE– The South Dakota State Historical Society is seeking donations of written materials that convey state history.
The State Archives, which is in the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre, collects such documents. State Archivist Chelle Somsen says examples include letters, diaries, unpublished writings, photographs, maps, and other source material.
Somsen says collections don’t have to be organized; nor do they have to relate specifically to famous people, events or organizations to be considered historically significant.
She says the historical society doesn’t have money to buy archival or museum materials, so it relies on generous citizens who may have pieces of South Dakota history.
