Baden is Germany’s tie to the Atlantic Ocean. Its people, religion, language, and even its borders have shifted over the centuries, but it has always played a vital role in Germany’s growth, development, and position in Europe. The overall shape and size of Baden was last changed in 1952. Before that, Baden had maintained it primary borders from 1810 to 1945.
Baden: Atlantic Bridge to Germany by Linda M. Herrick and Wendy K. Uncapher provides an excellent look into the history and the maps of this key Duchy of the German Empire. The first part of the book examines key historic elements such as immigration and emigration, education, transportation, and more. The second section of the book is filled with maps of Baden as it existed in 1898.
The final section of the book offers an index to place names in Baden taken from maps in the late 1800s. Places run from major cities to locations as small as farms and houses. The index has five columns covering the actual placename, the Amtsbezirk (district the place is in), the map page and grid location, and the Catholic and Protestant columns which list dates of church records found in the Family History Library Catalog.
