A 3D View Into Indiana’s History

I have seen many great photo books depicting the historical tales of everything from life in small communities to major world events. Some are interesting just for the stories they tell, while other capture the attention for the quality and unique perspective from which they photographically tell a story. Indiana in Stereo: Three-Dimensional Views of the Heartland is definitely one of the more unique approaches I have seen. The book is one of the more fun collections of historical imagery I have come across.

Indiana in Stereo is a collection of stereoscopic imagery covering the state of Indiana from the earliest photographs to contemporary images. Images are broken into categories, including landscapes, cities and town, landmarks, travel, home, family, and more. Along side the historical tale of Indiana told through the images, this book contains some fantastic essays on the history of stereographic photography, its use in Indiana, and the process as a continuing art form. The book comes complete with a set of glasses for viewing the stereographic images in the book, allowing the reader to get the intended 3D effect.

The book was edited by George R. Hanlin and Paula J. Corpuz and published by the Indiana Historical Society Press. Essays were written by Anne E. Peterson, a photographic historian, and Joan E. Hostetler, a professional photographer from Indiana with an extensive history working with the Indiana Historical Society. Also, an essay and photographs were provided by Darryl Jones, another professional photographer from Indiana.

You don’t need to be from Indiana, or even have ancestors from the state, to enjoy and appreciate this great photo history.
