Genealogical Standards of Evidence: A Guide for Family Historians was written by Brenda Dougall Merriman. In her words, this book is “intended as an introduction to the habits of careful researchers.” This includes explaining the basic standards of evidence and documentation as they exist in the genealogical community. In short, this book is a primer to proper research techniques, not the what and where but more the how and why.
This book provides an overview of the “reference model,” which includes sources, information, and evidence. Covering evidence includes the evaluation and analysis of evidence. A discussion on the Genealogical Proof Standard and on citing sources are all key elements covered in the chapter on standards. References are provided to sources for additional learning and improving one’s genealogical research skills. The book finishes with a number of “illustrated” examples of sources demonstrating research issues to watch for and evaluate.
