Salt Lake Christmas Tour……… Week’s Peek

Coming to you today from Kona, Hawaii, where John and I went to escape the Spokane winter……. and it’s glorious here, low 80s and barefoot an on the beach all day picking up pieces of coral…………. but this is a genealogy blog so:  Did you know there is a Native Hawaiian Genealogical Society? There is and it’s “dedicated to ensuring that the important work of studying and preserving the genealogy of the Native Hawaiian people.”  I could not find out much more about this group and I, like you, have questions. How many totally “native”Hawaiians are there? Is this a lineage society? How stringent are the requirements to join?

I do know this: in the Hawaiian language you pronouce every vowel. So on their website, they’ve used heahea, which means welcome and mo’olelo which means history. Can you pronounce those words??

I know that being here piques my interest and makes me want to read more about Hawaiian history and I probably will! The only history I know for starters is that we snorkeled in “Capt. Cook Bay”  (not the official name) and it was 213 years ago almost to the day (Valentines Day) that Capt. Cook was murdered on the spot where there is now a peeling-paint white obelisk.  So much history to learn! So little time!

Donna, aka Mother Hen, until next time.
