Working with old photographs can be a painstaking ordeal. Whether its to identify the individuals or the place and time the photo was taken, investigating the truth may prove a challenge. Knowing more about the photographer may just lead to some unexpected results. Diane VanSkiver Gagel has provided a tool to help those investigating old photographs with the Directory of Photographers in the United States 1888 & 1889 and Canada 1889.
Many professional photographers left their stamp or mark on the photographs they produced. By knowing who the photographer was then finding out where the photographer operated can help pinpoint the place and time period in which a photo was taken. Knowing where a photographer worked may also help in learning more about the photographer and his or her style and works.
“This directory was taken from the first and second annual editions of the Lithographers’ and Photographers’ Directory: A Directory for Lithographers, Photographers and for All Allied Arts and Trades in the Untied States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, published in 1888 and 1889.”
The original work, which is copied here, listed photographers by country, state, and city. Gagel added an alphabetical listing by surname and first name, making searching easier.
With any luck, a local historical society or library may have more information on any given photographer, and maybe even some samples of his or her work.
