FGS Conference Comes to Birmingham

The Federation of Genealogical Societies annual conference will take place in Birmingham, Alabama this week – come rain or shine… We’re expecting rain on Wednesday, thanks to hurricane Issac. Family Roots Publishing Co. will be exhibiting.

The following excerpt is from an article posted in the August 26, 2012 edition of al.com:

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama: About 900 people are expected in Birmingham Wednesday through Saturday to attend a major genealogy conference at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.

“Indians, Squatters, Settlers and Soldiers of the Old Southwest” is the conference, a national event presented by the Federation of Genealogical Societies. It’s the first year the group has selected Birmingham for its conference, said Annistine Gilbert, an officer with the Alabama Genealogical Society, the local host organization.

There will be nearly 160 educational presentations by genealogical experts and numerous opportunities to network with genealogists from across the country, Gilbert said. This year’s conference will provide expert help for individuals interested in the 1940 U.S. Census, which was made public this year, according to conference information.

While most people have pre-registered for the conference, walk-ins are welcome. The full conference is $245 and single day admission is $99.
Although rain may be a factor on Wednesday, nearly all of the events will take place indoors, she said. The threat of rain prompted the cancellation of one outdoor event, a private iron pour at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, said Yvonne Crumpler, conference co-chairwoman.
