September 17, 2012 – A Major Anniversary Day

This is a major United States historical anniversary today.

225 Years Ago today – The adoption of the United States Constitution took place on September 17, 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was then ratified by conventions in eleven states, going into effect on March 4, 1789.

150 Years Ago today – The Battle of Antietim took place near Sharpsburg, Maryland and Antietam Creek on September 17, 1862, as part of the Maryland Campaign, and was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. Without a doubt, the Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with 22,719 casualties. The Union had 12,401 casualties with 2,108 dead. Confederate casualties were 10,318 with 1,546 dead. This represented 25% of the Federal force and 31% of the Confederate. A number of Sharpsburg civilians also died, most in the aftermath of the battle – and most of disease brought about by the unsanitary conditions of area.
