We just returned from a seminar held by the Southern California Genealogical Society in Burbank. I spoke on Using Tax Records and Finding the Women in Your Pedigree. Dollarhide spoke on Wagon Roads of Our Ancestors and Using Deed Records. While there, I picked up a copy of their journal, “The Searcher.” It is one of the most informative and professional of any of the society journals I’ve seen. I understand the editor was a former editor at the LA Times. It shows. The issue I read (Jan-Feb 2003) was made up of 58 pages plus the covers, and included some excellent articles as well as queries, new acquisitions, short tidbits of information, announcements and so forth. One very interesting article by Beverly Mateer Taylor explained the holdings of a number of museums and archives. Included were the Griffith Park Archives, The Travel Town Museum, The Hollywood Museum and the Autry National Center. These facilities all hold collections of genealogical value. The Searcher is a great little journal. It comes with a membership to SCGS.
