Even though some technologies may become widely used, changes in those technologies require constant learning and adaptation. Sometimes, people just don’t need a certain technology when it becomes available, but later find a use for it. For others, we sometimes just forget how to do something and need a refresher. Having a resource, a guide, to turn to for learning or refreshing technological skills helps to ease anxiety and make possible success. One area were I have seen this many times is in scanning and editing photographs. Between technological advances and how easy it is to forget all the details one must remember when scanning and editing, having a book or a person to turn to for help make the job much easier. One place to turn to for advice is recorded webinars.
Web seminars, or “Webinars,” have quickly become one of the most popular ways for professionals and companies to share information with large groups of individuals from across the country, or even around the world, without the high cost of travel. Webinars are just like seminars. A large group of “attendees” can come and watch a presentation at a given time. Webinars are nice, since they are usually recorded and can be watched again at a later time. The only real downside to webinars is the video stream can be slow for some people. Depending in large part on the viewer’s own personal Internet connection speed, video may or may not play well. The age of a person’s computer may also contribute to slow playback. To counter these playback problems, some individuals and companies offer the option to buy their webinars on CD. CD’s offer the opportunity to play these webinars on almost any computer at anytime, without the worry of connection issues.
Legacy Family Tree offers some of their popular webinars on CD. Their series of webinars, presented by professional genealogists, provide expert advice on areas from traditional genealogical research to make use of the latest technologies both for research and for the maintenance of critical family data. Digital Images: Scanning, Editing, and Preserving Your Photos is just one webinar presented by Legacy’s own Geoff Rasmussen. With this video, the viewer can watch again and again, repeating the entire seminar or just those parts for which they need a refresher.
Geoff’s professional guidance and expertise comes through in this hour and forty-seven minute presentation. Here are just a few of the topics covered in this webinar:
- Learning how to digitize photographs and documents
- Choosing the resolution (dpi) setting
- Choosing the best file type (.tif, .jpg, etc.)
- Fixing and repairing photos and document images
“Geoff is a dynamic genealogy speaker on all forms of genealogy technology, and as host of the Legacy Family Tree webinar series, has spoken virtually to nearly 100 different countries.
