Hello this week from Kauaii………… which they call the Garden Isle and that means it’s lush and green and that means it rains daily in winter and February is winter so it’s rained some every day………… but there is sun every afternoon and that’s why we escaped the snow! This is a Red-Crested Cardinal, seen all over the Hawaiin Islands. It’s a tad smaller than the all-red-Northern Cardinal but way more friendly….. if you throw out crumbs they will hop practically to your feet without much fear. A really beautiful bird.
Got to thinking about Hawaiian genealogy……… www.hawaii-roots.com is a website for those tracing their native Hawaiin lineaages (and I’d guess there are fewer and fewer of such persons). A broader site is www.hawaii-genelalogy.com which looks to be a launching site. Folks here who consider themselves as native have a very diverse background; many came from Japan and China. There are eight islands that constitute the Hawaiian Islands, and only Niihau is home to only those true Native Hawaiians. They number under 200 and speak the native language. (Can you name the eight islands?)
“Family” news: Remember Trish Nicola Hackett? I guess she and hubby are here on Kauaii too for she’s posted on her Facebook page pix of the same places we’ve been. Did not run into her but would have been fun. Trish also sadly informed me that Marge Brumfield passed away. When Marge came on the Christmas Tour she was beautifully white-haired and only about five feet tall. We were all amazed to learn that she had been a department store bouncer!
Who is planning to be at RootsTech? A group pix would be nice………… let me know, please?
Donna, aka Mother Hen, until next peek.
