The following excerpt is from an article about the Richardson family of Derbyshire, and a new book by Maxwell Craven.
DERBY historian Maxwell Craven has helped shed the spotlight on one of the most important Derbyshire families over the last few hundred years in his latest book, The Richardsons of Derbyshire.
The Richardsons earned their fortune as tanners, curriers and leather merchants at one time employing hundreds of people.
Maxwell’s books charts the family’s history from its roots in the parish of Elvaston 400 years ago to its manufacturing heights before being hit by industrial decline.
Maxwell says: “I have started writing books for families who wanted their histories researched and this is my first major effort. It was originally done for the Richardsons and their ex employees but it is such an important part of Derby history I thought it would be nice to sell to the general public. It’s full of local history and is as much a story of Derby history as it is of the family.”
