NEW YORK, March 24 /PRNewswire/ – Lively stories told by descendants of an American Jewish financial dynasty, buttressed by superb genealogical detective work dating back to the late 1600s, make An American Experience: Adeline Moses Loeb and Her Early American Jewish Ancestors an engaging glimpse into a portion of our national history rarely explored. Introduced by author and Southern historian Eli N. Evans, the book is comprised of three parts.
- Part I recounts Adeline’s early life in the South and later life in New York married to Carl M. Loeb, founder of the legendary Wall Street firm of Loeb, Rhoades.
- Part II covers the history and enthusiastic public response to national exhibits of early American Jewish life.
- Part III is a genealogical narrative of eight generations of the Moses family, sprinkled with full-color early American portraits and reader-friendly family trees.
Critics and reviewers have labeled writer and Southern historian Eli Evans, a “master story” teller, a tribute borne out by his deft introduction to An American Experience: Adeline Moses Loeb and Her Early American Jewish Ancestors. Author of the perennially popular, The Provincials, a Personal History of Jews in the South, (35 years in print and according to novelist Pat Conroy “one of a kind, a masterpiece),” Evans is a leading voice in the world of Jewish historians. He appeared in several segments of the recent PBS television production of Jewish Americans, where he and his book Judah P. Benjamin: The Jewish Confederate were prominently featured. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001 for his dual contribution to American letters and a philanthropist of uncommon originality and leadership.
John L. Loeb Jr., a former ambassador to Denmark, and a grandson of Adeline Moses Loeb and Carl Loeb, has written the foreword to An American Experience, Adeline Moses Loeb and Her Early American Jewish Ancestors. Ambassador Loeb’s essay “An Anatomy of Patriotism,” most recently delivered shortly after 9/11 at the reopening of the Adeline Moses Loeb Gallery in the Fraunces Tavern Museum, also appears in the book.
The family stories told by his Southern-born paternal grandmother, Adeline Moses Loeb, were the genesis of this book, and inspired him to instigate its publication. Long a student of Jewish genealogy himself, he has supported the publication of the historical work of others, such as Dr. Melvin I. Urofsky’s, The Levy Family and Monticello, 1834-1923: Saving Thomas Jefferson’s House, and that of German writer and editor, Dr. Roland Flade, The Lehmans: From Rimpar to the New World, A Family History. John Loeb, like Eli Evans, was featured in several segments of the recent PBS documentary, Jewish Americans. Among many other recognitions, Ambassador Loeb has received Denmark’s Grand Cross of the Order of Dannebrog bestowed by Her Majesty, Queen Margrethe, and a C.B.E. bestowed by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
