As evening fell on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, a small band of Louisiana soldiers charged East Cemetery Hill, knocking back Ohio troops manning cannons at the hill’s crest. A hand-to-hand struggle ensued, according to the Civil War Trust, ending only when Union reinforcements reclaimed the site once and for all.
Last week, the Civil War Trust purchased a small portion — 0.93 acres — of the property where this fight took place from Gettysburg’s municipal authority at a cost of about $80,000.
The site, which sits between Baltimore Street and Wainwright Avenue, may not seem like much, but the Civil War Trust believes every piece of history counts, said spokesperson Mary Koik.
