The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has started compiling the old records of births and deaths registered in Delhi, India. It dug out files from the Delhi, India – City Zone (Chandni Chowk area) and Karol Bagh Zone offices last year. Over a hundred years old, these files were written in Urdu with a quill and ink. Registration of births and deaths started in 1879 when the British began requiring it.
The assembly the old records was started in 2005. Though the number of birth and death records is not available, the record room at the MCD’s Rajpur Road office has over 130 iron “cupboards” holding these old files in various volumes. This room has all the records till 1990.
