The Walpole [Massachusetts] Historical Society has recently published three new books, as follows:
Industrialists of Walpole, by Elizabeth Cottrell, Charles W. Hardy, et.al and Susan Anderson, editor. The biographies of six entrepeneurs and the businesses they established are told in this book. George Bird’s paper mill, Henry Plimpton’s iron works, the partnership of Hollingsworth and Vose, the Walpole Iron Foundry built by Squire Miller Fales, Henry S. Clarke’s Woolen Yarn Company, and Henry Kendall’s transformation of the Lewis Manufacturing Company into Kendall Mills. These enterprises employed thousands of people and generated great wealth, bringing fame and fortune to Walpole. 62 pages including maps, genealogical charts, and photographs. Copyright 2009. Price: $20.00.
The Story of Powderhouse Hill, by Charles W. Hardy, et al. Where The Condominiums at Swan Pond now stand there was once a high hill where a powderhouse was built before the Revolutionary War. Overlooking the town center, and guarding the old road to Wrentham, the hill was a landmark in Walpole for over two hundred years. On its flat summit was the retirement home of industrialist Squire Miller Fales, used later for a hospital, and after that as a home for truant boys. Each use of the hill has left a bit of history, and the stories of the people associated with the hill are told in this account. 20 pages with maps and photographs. Copyright 2007. Price:$7.50.
The Settlement at Stop River Falls, by Charles W. Hardy and Barbara J. Bartholomew, et.al. Stop River Falls is the name given by the authors to a section of West Walpole that is now part of Norfolk. Largely forgotten now, the area was once an important industrial site. The authors take us through the ancient ruins and document the lives of the persons who once thrived by the dam on the Stop River.
39 pages including genealogical charts, maps, and photographs. Copyright 2008. Price:$10.00.
