Every year, the Salt Lake Christmas Tour hosts a few couples – one of whom is researching and the other who’s along for the vacation. The fees for the non-researching spouse are very low, and make for an inexpensive vacation. In response to a question posed to me a few days ago, I put together a list of some of my favorite non-genealogy & non-shopping places to visit in the Salt Lake City area. By no means is the list comprehensive! These are all within anywhere from a 100 yards to 10 miles or so from the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, where we will be staying. If one is willing to go a ways further, there’s always the Great Salt Lake, and the BYU museums in the nearby city of Provo. However, there’s a ton to do without leaving Salt Lake City itself. Click on the links for additional information found at each venues’ own website.
- The Pioneer Memorial Museum (Daughters of Utah Pioneers)
- The Natural History Museum of Utah
- The Utah Museum of Fine Arts
- Chase Home Utah Museum of Folk Arts
- LDS Church History Museum – next door to the hotel.
- Fort Douglas Military Museum – my great-grandfather (1st Lt. Henry Canfield of the 7th Michigan Cavalry) died there in March of 1866, buried in the historic cemetery just down the street from the museum.
- Land Cruiser Heritage Museum
- Clark Planetarium
- Utah Museum of Contemporary Art
- The Leonardo
- Temple Square – across the street from the hotel.
