I’ve not done a lot of blogging for the last several months. Something had to give, and it was my writing and social media. I don’t make a big deal about my troubles, so this may be the first my readers know of my “fall.” In very early September, I set up a ladder, and proceeded to take a box down off of a shelf above me. Starting down the ladder, I missed a step and fell to the floor. It really wasn’t all that far – most likely about four feet. However, it seems that I still had the weight of the 50# box on my extended right arm when I hit the floor. It hurt like heck. My back collided with a shelf about the time I hit, and I thought for a bit I may have broken my back (been there – done that). Both my back and shoulder hurt. I was able to get up and although hurting, powered through it all. In fact, Patty and I went on an Alaskan cruise with Unlock the Past about 5 days later. After trying physical therapy, I had an MRI done on the shoulder, and found that I’d totally shredded my right rotator cuff – no wonder I hurt all the time. It was torn so badly that my surgeon wouldn’t guarantee that he could repair it. I finally had successful shoulder surgery the latter part of November. Ten days later Patty and I left for Salt Lake City and our annual Salt Lake Christmas Tour. My arm was in a sling, but at least I could get around. I got the sling off about several weeks ago and have been able to use my right arm (assisted by my left) since then. A few days ago, I began active physical therapy, and I expect to begin strengthening exercise soon. Note that all this fooling with going to doctors, hospitals and physical therapy takes ridiculous amounts of time. Thus my lack of communication.
I’m still having issues with my back, with numbness and aching extending down my left arm all the way to my fingers. We’re working on that issue. At the moment I can say, “Oh, my aching back!”
So, just to let you know, I’m back to blogging (with a prop under my right arm while typing). Not that you didn’t hear from me. We did enough sales work for FRPC to get through the annual Christmas season and end of year promotions. But I didn’t get to do any of the fun stuff, like genealogy, blogging, and the publication of the Genealogy Newsline. We’re trying out a number of new programs, so expect that you may see changes within GenealogyBlog, our websites, and the Genealogy Newsline over the next few months.
HI Leland:
Take care and get better really soon.
I plan to do whatever the medical professionals tell me to do. about 5 days ago I began to get a lot of nerve pain. My physical therapist tells me that a good thing, in that is a sign that the nerves are healing, but it’s no fun at the moment… I will survive. 🙂
Good to see you back. Slow and steady wins the race.
Sorry about your fall, etc. I did in my back and right shoulder after several falls on Handicapped sidewalks! Do your therapy and you should have full use of your shoulder eventually.
