There is a Huge Problem in the Paper and Book Industry

I spent much of the day searching for paper to print on. By getting very creative, FRPC was able to purchase enough paper to get us through the busy Christmas season. It cost about 25% more than it did a year ago, but at least we got it. We “eat” that 25%, as we preprint the price of books on the back cover in most cases.

I think everyone knows that there are “supply chain” issues on all kinds of products. And there is no end in sight for the problem. I wouldn’t think that paper would be in short supply. We live in the Pacific Northwest where we have trees everywhere, and where we used to have paper mills. The mills are gone. The few that are still operating in the USA can’t find enough labor. And many have switched to producing cardboard boxes for us folks that ship online products. Amazon is by far the biggest user of boxes, of course. So we’ll blame them… China has shut down between 200 and 300 pulp mills in an attempt to satisfy world condemnation for their polluting the atmosphere. And the Chinese paper that is making it to our shores is often not getting unloaded in a timely fashion.

And then there is the issue of getting what paper there is available. There aren’t anywhere near enough trucks and drivers to operate them. Any truck made prior to 2011 isn’t allowed on California highways, where we get much of our paper from. So, many small owner-operators can’t afford to even own a truck. Diesel prices are out of sight, causing another set of problems.

And I didn’t even mention inflation. Oh, I’m sorry… I did. In the first paragraph.

So, I’m praising the Lord that we were able to buy paper today! Like I say, we had to get creative. Just buying cases of paper as usual wasn’t an option. We may need another miracle in January.

Thanks to all of you for your support. We appreciate every one of you.
