Alabama State Archives to Reduce Hours & Services

The Alabama State Archives in Montgomery is feeling the pinch of the recession. The major effect on genealogists is that adahlogothere will be no more Saturday hours. Bummer…

Due to mid-year budget reductions, the Alabama Department of Archives and History is reducing a variety of services, including being open on Saturdays.

By March, the agency will have eleven fewer employees than it had a year ago, a 20 percent reduction in its staff. Five positions are being eliminated through attrition, and another six employees will be laid off effective January 31.

Because four of the eliminated positions regularly worked on weekends, the Archives will discontinue Saturday hours effective February 1.

Some previously scheduled events for 2009 will be rescheduled or cancelled. Visit the Department’s web site at www.archives.alabama.gov or call 334-242-4435 for information on upcoming events.

New hours for the Department’s museum galleries will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The research room will be open Tuesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
