The Nebraska State Historical Society will essentially close for the next year and a half – in order to renovate. Tomorrow (Saturday, January 17), is the last day of service.
An extensive renovation will close the historical society’s library, archival collection and reference room for about 18 months beginning next week. The last day of service will be Saturday.
We won’t be able to offer the convenient, one-stop shopping for awhile that researchers are accustomed to receiving, but this project will provide a much safer environment for storing the resources that people 100 years from now will want to see,” said Lynne Ireland, a historical society spokeswoman.
The $6.2 million project will bring the historical society headquarters’ safety, fire suppression, heating, cooling and ventilation systems up to current standards. Improvements also will bring the 1953 building into compliance with guidelines for access by the physically disabled.
The work is limited to the society’s main building at 1500 R St., at the north end of Centennial Mall opposite the State Capitol. Administrative offices in the building will remain open during the renovation.
