On the weekend, the family, who lives outside Detroit, settled here by the shore of Lake Ontario and took part in the reenactment of the first landing of the United Empire Loyalists, 225 years ago today.

Like many in attendance at the Adolphustown event, Brock Dittrick can trace his family tree back to one of the first Loyalists to settle in Canada in 1784, Jacob Dittrick, who landed near St. Catharines.

The 40-year-old father said it was “deeply important” to be at the event.

“I feel I have a greater connection to what my ancestors have done,” he said.
