Brookhaven, Mississippi Jewish Temple May Become an Historical Museum

BROOKHAVEN [Mississippi] — The ownership of Brookhaven’s historic Jewish temple may soon change hands to the Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society.

The move would guarantee the temple’s preservation and end the society’s search for a place to call home.

Hal Samuels, facilitator of the Temple B’nai Shalom, said letters are being sent across the country to descendants of the temple’s former congregation to basically ask permission to donate the structure to the historical society.

He said the temple would be donated with the understanding that it would be used as a museum permanently, both for the historical society and as a Jewish heritage museum.

  1. We have been very honored to use the building to establish a local museum intended to represent all areas of our county’s history. While we hope to receive many more historical items in the coming months, we can now announce our Grand Opening for March 11, 2011. This would never have been possible without the generosity and encouragement of the Samuels family.
