Life & Death on the Battlefield With Mystery Solved on the Internet

ELIZABETHTOWN [Kentucky] — The story of World War II veteran Alvey T. Smothers’ search for the man who saved his life Sept. 2, 1944, resounded through cyberspace — and the world — Tuesday and Wednesday and provided answers.

Dennis H. Proffitt saved Smothers during a battle in Brest, France.

Smothers learned Tuesday afternoon that Proffitt died in battle on Sept. 4, 1944, two days after saving his life.

“That’s the day I got wounded,” Smothers said, upon hearing the news.

In fact, Smothers received a Purple Heart for being injured the day Proffitt died. Two days prior to Smothers being wounded Proffitt had shot a German soldier who was about to shoot Smothers.
