Cincinnati’s Early Birth & Death Records to be Digitized

Cincinnati’s birth and death records located in the University of Cincinnati’s Archives and Rare Books Library expects a major overhaul with the funding from a $140,437 Library Service and Technology Act grant.

The project is the result of six to seven years of work.

It allows university libraries to digitize records, making them more accessible to the general public. It benefits students as well as the community, genealogists, urban historians and public health officials.

There are approximately 340,000 birth and death records in the catalog. The death records date from 1865 while birth records date from 1874. However, both end at 1908 as the state took possession of the records.
