Land of Hope and Dreams: Celebrating 25 Years of Springsteen in Ireland, by Moira Sharkey & Greg Lewis is now in print and available. The book tells the story of every tour from “Born in the USA” to “Working On A Dream.” It also includes photos and stories from his fans. What makes the volume interesting to me is its emphasis on Bruce Springsteen’s family history, which includes his Irish ancestral ties.
Bruce Springsteen’s Irish roots come from his paternal grandmother, Martha O’Hagan. O’Hagan’s grandmother, Ann Garrity, is said to have come from Mullingar in County Westmeath. Ann Garrity immigrated in 1852, and moved to Freehold, New Jersey. When Springsteen sang “My Hometown,” he was singing of Freehold, where he was born 60 years ago.
Land of Hope and Dreams: Springsteen in Ireland is being released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Springsteen’s concert at Slane Castle in 1985. Check out www.springsteeninireland.com to order or get more information.
Lenny Sullivan Passes at 36
On another note, Lenny Sullivan, Bruce’s cousin and the assistant road manager of the E Street Band for the last ten years, passed away yesterday (Oct. 26, 2009) at the age of 36. For this reason, Bruce canceled his show last night that was to take place at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. See his website for more info. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
