VIENNA – The Daniel Chapman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution [of Vienna, Illinois] turned 100 today. The charter was received Nov. 3, 1909.
May Chapman, the wife of Pleasant Thomas Chapman, had been a DAR member in Washington, D.C., and thought Johnson County should have a chapter. On Aug. 10, 1909, “or thereabouts,” according to 1909 minutes, Mrs. Chapman and five other women gathered at her home to organize a chapter.
Those six original members were Mrs. Chapman, Mrs. Orrie Thacker, Miss Althea Thacker, Mrs. D.W. Whittenberg, Mrs. Eva McKenzie Huffman and Mrs. Georgia Blanchfill Gillespie.
