For months, the woman had been watching Joanne Eckert.
Listening for the inflections in her voice when she spoke with customers or laughed.
Observing her frustrated reaction when she couldn’t dislodge a container stuck under the counter.
Looking for similarities.Joanne never noticed. The 61-year-old East Rochester resident has worked the checkout counter at the Rite Aid in Bushnell’s Basin for 13 years, and has a reputation around the store for being a bit of a chatterbox.
Always cracking jokes and talking with customers, she never knew that she was being watched until finally, after nearly a year of inquisitive looks and listens, the woman approached her.
“I know this is going to sound crazy,” she said, “but can I ask you a personal question?”
I guess so, said Joanne.
“Were you adopted?”
Actually, yes, I was, replied Joanne.
“What’s your birth date?”
Joanne told her.
The woman nodded, a smile creeping across her face. “Do you want to meet your twin sister?”
