WEBSTER COUNTY, KY – The Webster County Historical and Genealogical Society is planning what its members hope becomes a regular event for local citizens. “History Day,” set for Thursday, Oct. 21, developed out of a suggestion by Webster County Public Library staff members to the society regarding ways to encourage the public to visit the society’s research room in the library basement.
Historical Society Secretary Roxie Rhea said the event will highlight historical items brought in for the day on loan by people in the community.
“We just want those items for a day,” Rhea said of the society’s request. “People can get them back that day.”
She added that the historical society hopes people who loan the items will stay with them during the event to talk to other guests about them. Items can be brought to the research room on Oct. 21 anytime between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., and can retrieve them between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. the same day.
“If someone has an item they would like displayed but they are unavailable that day or lack transportation to get the item to Dixon, then a member of the society would be happy to assist in getting the items to the display site,” a historical society news release regarding the event stated.
Items loaned out for the event can have any level of historical significance, ranging from personal family history to military history to something community-related.
Rhea said the items don’t necessarily have to be “antiques.” “We’re looking for family Bibles, photographs, information on communities, or items depicting history in Webster County communities,” she said.
