In an age where we daily here of library hours being shortened, it’s nice to see some that are being expanded. Following is an excerpt from an article in the Tulare Advance-Register. I blogged about the genealogy collection move to the library last August.
{Tulare Public] Library Director Michael Stowell said earlier this week a new hire could pave the way to open the library an hour earlier, starting in January.
“At that time, I feel like we could be in a position to open up at 10 a.m. all five days,” he said.
Currently, the library, 475 South M St., is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Extending library hours could also mean an increase of hours for the Sequoia Genealogical Society, whose collection is housed at the library.
Because the learning center, which shares space with the society, is open on Saturday mornings and limits the society to only two hours, the genealogical collections is closed on weekends.
Ortega said Saturday mornings appears to be the preferred time for out-of-town genealogical researchers.
“Saturday seems to be the best day,” he said. “It would be a natural for it.”
Stowell said opening the genealogical collection on Saturday has already been talked about with society board members. In fact, Stowell pointed out, the genealogical society will offer a computer-assisted research class, which will then be transferred to the room where the collection is stored to continue instruction.Stowell said such hours could be kept after the class is over.
